PUBH7617 Pharmacoeconomics

Revised pharmacoeconomics course

The revamped course, co-ordinated by Dr Samantha Hollingworth, goes beyond the traditional emphasis on cost-effectiveness analysis and explores the broader regulatory and policy environment in Australia and internationally.

This semester 2 course introduces students to the basic concepts of pharmacoeconomics and aims to help students develop knowledge of the regulatory, economic and policy framework of pharmaceuticals in Australia and the relationship to other reimbursement systems internationally.

Visiting guest lecturers, including current and former staff of the Department of Health and Ageing, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), Uniquest and a pharmaceutical company will help students understand the different roles and viewpoints of key players in the pharmaceutical sector.

Dr Hollingworth says that, while the course is primarily aimed at Public Health and Health Economics students, its content is useful for those studying in related fields, such as Medicine and Pharmacy.

“The knowledge of how Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) operates and the ability to critique the broader issues of pharmaceutical policy in Australia and internationally will be invaluable for many health professionals,” she said.

Students wishing to study PUBH7617 in semester 2 are encouraged to enrol now. The course is complementary to a dedicated cost-effectiveness course with an analytical focus (PUBH7618 Cost effectiveness in health and medicine).
