Control of Non-Communicable Diseases

Introduction
This course addresses the major non-communicable diseases (NCD) namely cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung disease, renal failure, mental disorders and injury which are responsible for considerable disease burden in developed, newly industrialised and middle income countries. These diseases are becoming increasingly prominent in many developing countries, particularly in urban areas.
Aims
The main objective of this course is to provide students with the ability to critically evaluate evidence for causation and effectiveness of control of non-communicable diseases in populations.
Content
Specific topics include:
- Overview of measuring disease burden, health economics, evidence-based policy
- Mental health
- Maternal/perinatal health
- Major risk factors and cost-effectiveness of intervention options
- Injury
- COPD/Asthma
- Indigenous Health
- Cancers
- Cardiovascular disease
- Overnutrition and Diabetes Mellitus
Assessment
Two written assignments and an oral presentation
Recommended texts
Various journal articles and other documents will be supplied to students.
