International Disease Control Priorities

Introduction
This course covers the assessment of disease burden by cause; prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable disease and injuries. Causes and control of: malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS, under-nutrition, acute respiratory infection, diarrhoeal disease, vaccine preventable disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, injuries.
Aims
The principal objectives of this course are to:
1. Survey of the major disease priorities in countries at different levels of development using epidemiological and disease burden metrics.
2. Provide an understanding of the ecology of health and disease in populations at different stages of development, the influence of environmental and socio-economic and cultural factors, and general approaches to disease control and health promotion through health and other services.
3. Provide an understanding of the causes and control of the priority conditions responsible for disease burden in high and low mortality countries by consideration of specific conditions.
4. On the basis of knowledge and understanding, enable participation in disease control and health promotion programs across a wide variety of ecological and development contexts.
Content
Specific topics include: 1. Measurement of disease in populations and assessment of disease burden by cause in various world regions and in countries at different levels of development 2. Approaches to population disease assessment and surveillance, and to the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable disease and injuries in countries along the development spectrum 3. Causes and control of major international disease priorities 4. For individual conditions, examination of: (a) biology and natural history of disease (b) epidemiology (c) entomology and vector biology where relevant (d) social, economic and cultural factors (e) structured strategies and interventions and strategies for control (f) control programs in health and other services.
Assessment
A written assignment and a group presentation.
