Biography:
Theo Vos started out his career as a 'bush doctor' in district hospitals in Lesotho and Zimbabwe for nine years. He then did a MSc Public Health in Developing Countries at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In the three years following as a staff member he led the Maurtitius Burden of Disease Study. In 1997 he moved to Australia to work for the Victorian Department of Human Services and carried out the Victorian Burden of Disease study as well as two economic evaluation studies: ACE-Heart Disease and ACE-Mental Health. Theo currently is Director of Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness at the School of Population Health of the University of Queensland. The Centre aims to provide health policy makers with best available evidence to guide the allocation of resources. Theo has made major contributions to the national Australian study and studies in Zimbabwe, Thailand, South Africa and Malaysia. He is leading the update of the Australian Burden of Disease study including for the first time an Indigenous study. He is currently directing two large economic evaluation projects: a) the ACE-Prevention project which over the coming five years will model the cost-effectiveness of 100 prevention options for non-communicable disease in Australia; and b) the SPICE project in Thailand examining intervention options for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, mental disorders, lifestyle risk factors and road traffic injuries.Qualifications:
