Brief summary of what the organisation does:

The Australian Health Promotion Association is the peak body representing people working in health promotion. Its mission is to provide knowledge, resources and perspectives needed to improve health promotion research and practice. The Association does this through:

  • The Health Promotion Journal of Australia;
  • Annual National Health Promotion conference;
  • Professional development seminars and workshops;
  • National and state newsletters;
  • Advocacy at the National and state levels; and
  • E-mail alert service to members about job vacancies, professional development opportunities and recent reports.

What type of tasks/duties would a Master of Public Health Graduate do in your organisation?

The Executive committee of the Health Promotion Association (Qld) is comprised of volunteers. We do not have paid positions. MPH graduates are encouraged to nominate for the Executive committee to help us achieve our mission.

What type of skills is your organisation looking for in a prospective employee?

MPH graduates on the committee would be expected to attend meetings once per month, contribute towards our mission by being actively involved on one of our sub-committees (e.g. professional development and membership, newsletter, advocacy).

What is the typical salary range for a graduate employee?

In the health promotion field – $40,000 (AO4) to $80,000.

The Department of Health and Ageing leads the development of Australia's health and aged care system by providing expert policy advice, analysis and other services to Government.

We aim to be a leader in promoting, developing and funding world class health and aged care services for all Australians.

We provide advice to our Ministers on a whole range of government policies and then put initiatives into place. This means delivering programs ourselves or funding other organisations to deliver them on our behalf.

Tasks/duties include:

  • conducting research and analysis for reports;
  • preparing briefing material for conferences and ministerial visits;
  • applying legislation;
  • research and development for major projects;
  • analysis and evaluation of Health and Ageing policies;
  • preparing material for publication;
  • parliamentary business including briefings, speeches, question time briefs, ministerial reports, letters and minutes;
  • liaising with key stakeholders;
  • supporting project and contract management.

What type of skills is your organisation looking for in a prospective employee?

What is the typical salary range for a graduate employee?

In the Department’s graduate program, employees with a Masters degree or higher will receive $36,950 for the first 6 months of employment, and then subject to satisfactory performance will increase to $44,734 (APS level 4) for the remainder of the program.

What opportunities would there be for a Master of Public Health graduate to advance in your organisation?

In the State Office, it is common for graduates to successfully win positions at the APS 5 level ($48,655 – $51,353), upon completion of the graduate program.

A range of professional development opportunities exist and staff are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

The Public Health Association of Australian is the peak body representing people working in public health and related areas in Australia. It is a non-profit, non-party political organisation which is dedicated to the promotion of public health and the support and development of its members. The association does this through:

  • the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health;
  • the annual conference and special conferences (eg food and nutrition, prisons health, immunisation);
  • the Special Interest Groups (SIGs);
  • the State and Territory Branches: and,
  • the newsletter 'intouch', a website and email list.

What type of tasks/duties would a Master of Public Health Graduate do in your organisation?

An MPH graduate could undertake a number of roles within the PHAA state branch. Members of the state branch executive would be expected to attend monthly meetings as well as assist with one of the working groups. The working groups relate to professional development, mentoring, advocacy and communication, as well as occasionally helping to stage larger events like workshops and conferences.

What type of skills is your organisation looking for in a prospective employee?

The PHAA state branch would welcome people who have a knowledge and interest in public health, a commitment to trying to improve the health of the population, and a desire to support fellow members in their public health orientated endeavors.

What is the typical salary range for a graduate employee?

As the PHAA state branch executive is staffed by volunteers, there is no remuneration attached to any of the responsible positions, however members will be able to include information about their PHAA branch position and experience on their CV, and also use post nominals related to membership.

What opportunities would there be for a Master of Public Health graduate to advance in your organisation?

MPH graduates could learn more about public health and the operation of a professional association. Active membership enhances public health knowledge and skills generally, as well as in the specific areas of planning and conducting professional development events and policy development. Active membership also allows for networking opportunities with other members, and other public health professionals, especially those from partnering organisations, the Australian Health Promotion Association, and the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
