Biography:
Fernanda Claudio was born in Portugal but migrated to Montreal at the age of three. Her interest in anthropology developed out of her experience as a migrant at the crossroads of Portuguese and Canadian social identities. Both her B.A. (Hons) and M.Sc. theses focussed on aspects of migration to Canada. Her Honours thesis addressed issues of migrant health, while M.Sc. work considered socio-cultural aspects of second generation migration. Dr. Claudio's Ph.D research was based in Africa in a remote part of the Zambesi Valley, Zimbabwe. Her work there addressed processes of political and economic domination in the context of drought and international development programs. In the past she has also participated in a study on the place of culture in the clinical encounter in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Claudio coordinates the Health and Development course at the Australian Centre for International and Tropical Health. She is currently engaged in AusAID-funded research on aspects of skills and training important to Australian overseas humanitarian workers. Current emerging research includes issues in African refugee health in Southeast Queensland and mental health aspects issues in areas of prolonged drought in Australia.Qualifications:
